Channel Upgrade - Did you see or Notice? [DVB-S2] (May 2025)
Share
UKTV has upgraded its satellite broadcast signal for Sky and Freesat viewers by transitioning to the more efficient DVB-S2 standard, aligning with similar moves by the BBC, ITV, Channel 4, and Sky.(RXTV)
What’s Changed?
As of 18 February 2025, the standard definition (SD) versions of UKTV channels—such as U&Alibi, U&Dave, U&Drama, U&Eden, U&Gold, U&W, and U&Yesterday—are now transmitted using DVB-S2. This change also affects their corresponding +1 channels.(RXTV, The Sun)
For most viewers with modern equipment like Sky+HD, Sky Q, or Freesat HD/4K boxes, the transition should be seamless. However, if you notice any missing channels, a simple reboot of your receiver may resolve the issue. HD versions of these channels on Sky, as well as users of Sky Glass and Sky Stream, remain unaffected.(The Sun, RXTV, RXTV)
Why the Upgrade?
The shift to DVB-S2 is part of a broader industry initiative aimed at enhancing bandwidth efficiency. Originally introduced to support HD channels, DVB-S2 allows broadcasters to transmit both SD and HD content more effectively, reducing satellite bandwidth usage and associated costs.(RXTV, satandpcguy.com)
With this upgrade, UKTV gains additional capacity on its satellite transponder. While the broadcaster hasn't specified plans for this extra space, possibilities include launching dedicated Irish versions of its channels or transitioning some services to HD-only formats.(RXTV)
Technical Details for Manual Tuning
If you're using a generic satellite receiver and need to manually tune in UKTV channels, use the following parameters:(RXTV)
-
Satellite: Astra 2E
-
Transponder: 22
-
Frequency: 12129 MHz
-
Polarisation: Vertical
-
Mode: DVB-S2, 8PSK
-
Symbol Rate: 27500 (27.5 Mbaud)
Please note that first-generation SD-only satellite receivers are no longer compatible with these channels due to the DVB-S2 upgrade.(satandpcguy.com)
Industry Context
While major broadcasters have adopted DVB-S2, some, including Paramount (Channel 5) and Narrative Entertainment (GREAT! movies, POP!), continue to use the older DVB-S format. Sky also maintains certain feeds, such as Sky News and IRN, in DVB-S.(RXTV)
This transition reflects the industry's ongoing efforts to modernize satellite broadcasting infrastructure, ensuring more efficient use of available bandwidth and paving the way for future enhancements.
